History @ Tollcross

The present Tollcross Primary School was built in 1912. The school was originally known as the Lothian Road Public School and was situated where the Usher Hall is today.
The reason for the move was a bequest of £100,000  by William Usher of the brewing family.   A concert hall was to be built for the city. It was decided to demolish the school and a new one re-named Tollcross Public School was built on the present site opening in 1912. The Usher Hall as it stands today was opened two years later.
The new school was built on the site of the Public Slaughterhouse. At the time there was a lot of discussion regarding the beautiful Egyptian style gates at the front of the Slaughterhouse. Many people felt the gates should be kept as the entrance to the school. However at the time Fountainbridge was being widened and the school set back from the road, as can be seen today. It was decided to remove the gates and to this day their whereabouts remain a mystery.
